CANTERBURY RUGBY CLUB PHOTOGRAPHY KENT
03/11/2013
The 1DX with 70-200mm and 1.4 x converter gave me a focal length of 98-280mm, less then the cropped sensor of the 1D4 but I wanted to put the camera through its paces, and with the build quality of the 1D's a few torrential showers won't trouble it at all. The game started at a frantic pace with Canterbury scoring the first try within minutes only to concede a lot of possession throughout the game to Dings, with seconds to spare they won the game 21-18.
I have used a variety of the modes of the 1D which cater for a variety of different sports/subjects, with rugby their is a lot of horizontal movement so the Case 4 setting seemed ideal for subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly. With a few test shots whilst the team were training it coped effortlessly with the quick and erratic movements of the players, and indeed during the match. I set the ISO at 1600 which gave me shutter speeds of 1/500, as the light started to fall along with the downpour it provided more of a test for me in staying dry, thankfully the 1D and L series telephoto lenses are weather proof and still worked in excessive weather. Looking forward to covering more games now the weekends are quitter during the Winter months, fingers crossed for some better weather next time though!
