When you have a dark stage and subdued lighting which then in a blink of an eye goes to brighter extremes it is very much a case of manual settings and a bit of luck. For each dance the mood of lighting was the same cast and by dialing in 1/80th @ F2.8 and ISO's from 800-1250 the images were coming out well. The exposures were anywhere between 1-3 stops under but as the dancers came in to the frame the exposure balanced well with the spotlights on the dancers creating some sharp images as well as some blurring which created a sense of movement. I tried an experiment with a tripod as well. 2-5 second exposures shot wide with apertures around F11 to create some motion blur, the one below worked out really well and looks like a multiple exposure although iy was just a single frame.
