CHRIST CHURCH UNIVERSITY MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY KENT
08/06/2011
Having covered quite a few events at the Quarterhouse and knowing Andy Hurst's style of lighting it was very much a case of waiting for the right lighting and expression from the musicians. Clare was on hand to get a mix of wider photos which set the scene for the performances, plus they really showed the lighting off to great effect. The settings on the cameras were full manual, keeping ISO's down to 80-1000, always the temptation to go higher but with the manual mode giving under exposure in most instances this worked better as it gave detail in the performers, sometimes the lighting can be too bright and blow out any details. Their was a real mix of musical styles, including rock, pop, jazz, funk and acoustical elements to the evening, favourite for me was the Rush cover of "Tom Sawyer". I had also been asked to take some photos of a new Soundcraft mixing desk, the Mark IV coped brilliantly with the low light and the image is the RAW file just converted, no colour correction needed and at ISO 3200 it is sharp and has retained the details superbly.
