HORSE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY IN CANTERBURY, KENT

It was purely coincidental for this afternoons portrait shoot of two horses that the weather was exactly the same as the previous horse photography two months ago, low afternoon sun seeping through the bare tress providing an atmospheric backdrop to the subjects. As before all I needed to light the horses and Laura and her Mum were a single Canon Speed Lite which was situated camera right on a lighting stand. The trick was to get the horses to stay still just so the warm glow of the sun acted as a rim light to the subjects with the flash filling in the shadow areas.

I used the 70-200mm lens which is perfect for the portrait and landscape portraits, it also gives a bit of distance from the horses, never sure how they will react to the flash gun, they actually seemed more interested in the grass that Laura was bribing them with so that there heads stayed in the right place. Looking forward to covering some more horse portrait photography in Kent soon.
